The Yearly GELT's TOP 1942

James Cagney in Captains Of The Clouds (Michael Curtiz, 1942)

Song of the year :  Why Don't You Do Right  performed by Benny Goodman, showcasing a newcomer just landed from her native North Dakota named Peggy Lee. She impressed so much the bandleader when he heard her voice that he decided to hire her without delay. And he was absolutely right.

Written in 1936 by bluesman Joe McCoy, the song had shortly before been recorded by vocalist Lil Green.
