The Yearly GELT's TOP 1943

Ingrid Bergman & Gary Cooper in For Whom The Bell Tolls (Sam Wood, 1943)
Artist of the Year : Lena Horne
Born in Brooklyn but raised mainly in Pennsylvania and Georgia, Lena Horne made at 16 her debut on stage as chorus girl at the Cotton Club where she performed until she joined Noble Sissle's Orchestra with which she made her first recording. She toured with Charlie Barnet but left soon to work at the CafĂ© Society in New York before being hired by the MGM Studios in Hollywood. She featured since 1943 in some musicals, making a resounding appearance in Stormy Weather, a movie showcasing, for the first time in Hollywood, several African American Musicians

With her cover of  Stormy Weather, a hit originally performed in 1933 by Ethel Waters, Lena Horne makes a breakthrough in Hollywood although she is a black actress.
