The Yearly GELT's TOP 1945

Gene Kelly & Frank Sinatra in Anchors Aweigh (George Sidney, 1945)
Song Of The Year: Even though several titles could pretend to be selected as song of the year, Laura performed by clarinetist and bandleader Woody Herman emerged as the most outstanding tune. The poetic and nostalgic lyrics enhanced by a brilliantly effective melodic line, originally written for the movie Laura (starring Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews) released on screens a year before, allowed Woody Herman to score there a smash hit. Although he had for almost 10 years been a praiseworthy conductor and instrumentalist, he had still never flaunted such crooning vocalist qualities.

Artist of the year: Johnny Mercer. This successful songwriter had already played a leading role for several years but he was at the moment behind most major hits, not hesitating to perform them himself such as in Candy, On the Atchinson ,Topeka and the Santa Fe or still Dream showcasing by the way the famous Pied Pipers, a key close harmony vocal group on the musical stage since 1940.

Young vocalists started for their part to write their name in the legend: Doris Day, Kay Starr and June Christy.
