Musical of the year: Meet Me In St Louis
Directed by Vincente Minelli and starring Judy Garland whom he will soon after marry in real life, Meet Me In St Louis is regarded as the first movie of the new golden age of Hollywood musicals. The plot takes place in 1904 in St. Louis on the eve of the World’s Fair and tells the story of a well-to-do family living in the city for many decades that sees its future darken when the father announces that they will have to move to New York where he was promoted. Nostalgic and sentimental melodrama, this moving comedy shot in Technicolor for MGM was the great hit movie of the year but mainly remained to posterity for the Trolley Song, an iconic track which remains with Over The Rainbow Judy Garland’s most famous performances.
