Jeanette MacDonald & Maurice Chevalier in Rouben Mamoulian's Love Me Tonight |
Music: Jay Gorney / Lyrics:"Yip" Harburg)
With lyrics pointing at the politicians, their false promises and inability to cope with the Depression that plunged millions of Americans into poverty, this song was especially a moving tribute to the glory of all ordinary workers struck by joblessness. " Yip " Harburg, who wrote the song was himself managing an important company before going bankrupt in 1929 and finding unemployed. He owed to George Gershwin his partnership with composer Jay Gorney. Rudy Vallee and Bing Crosby recorded their own rendition nearly at the same moment. That of Bing Crosby remains better known but without removing anything from its qualities, it's maybe Rudy Vallee who, through an effectual musical arrangement, creates a dramatic progression best expressing the emotional content and despair conveyed by the song.
