Jane Russell & Bob Hope in The Paleface (Norman Z. McLeod, 1948) |
Artist Of The Year : Patti Page
The life of Patti Page began as begin sometimes the fairy tales. Born into a poor family from Oklahoma, his father worked on the railroad whereas her mother was a cotton picker. There was no electricity at home and for lack of light, it was impossible for the children to read lessons after the sunset. The young Clara Anne (her real name) had however on her own an amazing asset, her voice. She got at 18 a job in the Tulsa radio station what allowed her to show her abilities as vocalist. She was soon noticed and hired by the saxophonist Jack Real in his orchestra the Jimmy Boy Band. On tour in Chicago in 1947, she got acquainted with Benny Goodman, always in search of a new voice. He allowed her to get a contract with Mercury Records. While she was in full recording session, a strike broke out in the studios depriving her of background singers. Patti had then the idea to dub her own voice, what wouldn't delay to look like a real revolution. A high talented vocalist, she soon ranked among the best records sellers of her time.
