Mary Astor & Ann Harding in Edward H. Griffith's movie "Holiday" (1930) |
Artists of the year: The Boswell Sisters
Raised in New Orleans, Connee, Martha and Vet Boswell started in 1925 performing in the theaters of the city. Logically influenced by local jazz, they first formed an instrumental trio before gradually moving toward a vocal group. Bright and innovative, they gave new colors to popular song by pushing boundaries of close harmony. They adapted current hits in their way, mixing their knowledge of syncopated music and changes in tempo with an ability to go back and forth from major to minor mode. Although they started recording for Victor Records, it is only after performing in 1930 in New York and first radio broadcasts that they proved popular.
Song of the year : Mood Indigo
Duke Ellington explores in a personal way the possibilities of 3 front instruments that are trumpet, clarinet and trombone by creating an effect soon called the "mike tune" giving the illusion of a fourth one.
Vocalist Ivie Anderson performed the song, bringing to it, despite time, a still alive singulariry.
