Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan in Tarzan and his Mate |
Song of the year : Night And Day, song
written by Cole Porter performed by Fred Astaire in The Gay
Divorcee.
Artist of
the year : Jimmie Lunceford
He left from childhood his native Mississippi for Denver
(CO) where he attended in particular the music school managed by Wilberforce J.
Whiteman, father of the famous bandleader Paul Whiteman. No sooner had he
completed his university studies that he was hired in 1922 as saxophonist in
George Morrison's band.
Appointed a little later as a teacher in Memphis, he
founded there a band of students who started recording in 1927.
Gifted
instrumentalist, he knew how to be sided with the best musicians with whom he
proved however very requiring. It is certainly due to the rigor he
imposed on the orchestra that he will develop the famous Lunceford
bounce, a pacey tempo suited to dancing and
usually regarded as an archetype of the big bands and swing era. Ranked at the
time as equal to Duke Ellington and Earl Hines, he succeeded
in 1934 Cab Calloway at the Harlem Cotton Club.
He recorded among others two tracks arranged by Will
Hudson: Jazznocracy and White Heat which did not delay
making him one of the most popular artists of his generation.
