Paulette Goddard & James Stewart in Pot O' Gold (George Marshall, 1941) |
Artist of the year : Helen O'Connell
Born in Lima, Ohio, in 1920 she made her debut in a radio
station of St Louis before singing in Larry Funk’s band. It was during a tour
that she met in New York Jimmy Dorsey who was then looking for a
vocalist to replace Ella Mae Morse, left hurriedly. She contracted with him
in 1938 and started recording but really achieved the best of her career
when duetting with Bob Eberly, completing his crooning style with her
up-tempo swinging chorus. The name of Helen O'Connell since remains associated
with some major hits such as Amapola, Tangerine or Green
Eyes.
Song of the year : Let Me Off Uptown performed by Gene Krupa, Anita O'Day and Roy Eldridge
Thanks to vocalist Anita O'Day and her sense of
rhythm, Gene Krupa got at last a hit up to his standards.
